Abstract
The invention comprises a mixture in disproportionation equilibrium of silicates of the formul <FORM:0738339/IV (b)/1> , <FORM:0738339/IV (b)/2> , wherein R represents at least one aromatic hydrocarbon radical other than the phenyl radical, the said mixture having the average formula C6H5Si(OC6H5)x(OR)y, wherein R has the above significance, x has a value from 0.75 to 2.5, y has a value from 0.5 to 2.25 and the sum of x and y is 3, and a process for the preparation thereof by reacting substantially one mol. of phenyltrichlorosilane with a mixture of substantially three mols. of phenolic compounds, said mixture comprising from 0.75 to 2.5 mols. of phenol and from 0.5 to 2.25 mols. of the other required phenolic compounds. It is preferred to use approximately 10 per cent excess of phenolic reactants for the above reaction. Suitable phenols to produce the radical RO-are o-, m- and p-cresol, the isomeric ethylphenols, o-, m- and p-phenylphenol, alpha- and beta-naphthol and a commercial mixture of isomeric cresols. The four silicates of the above general formula can be separated by distillation. In the examples a number of mixtures are prepared using a commercial mixture of cresols or o-phenylphenol and phenol.
