Abstract

Trialkyl monoaryl-, dialkyl diaryl- and alkyl triaryl-orthosilicates are prepared by (a) reacting a mixture of an alcohol and one or more phenols with silicon tetrachloride; (b) radical interchange between an aryl- and an alkylorthosilicate; (c) reacting an alcohol and an aryl orthosilicate; and (d) reacting an alkyl orthosilicate and a phenol. The products may be separated by distillation. In the examples the above orthosilicates are prepared wherein the alkyl groups are the methyl, ethyl and isopropyl groups and the aryl groups are the phenyl and o-cresyl groups. Similar compounds may be prepared using any cresol or xylenol. Other orthosilicates mentioned contain the phenyl group and the isobutyl, isoamyl or n-butyl group.
