738,288. Machine-tool details; indexing. CENTRAL TOOL & EQUIPMENT CO., Ltd. Aug. 28, 1953 [Sept. 5, 1952], No. 22412/52. Class 83 (3). Automatic indexing mechanism for a worktable comprises a floating cylinder spring- loaded to a position in which it holds the table locked against rotation, a piston movable within the cylinder against a return spring to rotate the table through a predetermined angle, and means for admitting fluid under pressure into the cylinder, whereby, the cylinder is moved against its spring to free the table for rotation and the piston is moved in the opposite direction against its return spring to rotate said table through the predetermined angle. A rotary table 1, Fig. 1, with twelve work-holding stations 2, has a spindle 3 to which is keyed a notched index-plate 5 and a ratchet wheel 15, Fig. 3. A floating cylinder 7, Fig. 2, in the housing 8 of the device carries a locking-member 6 which is pressed into a notch of the index plate by a spring 16 at the lower end of the cylinder. The latter has a connection 10, Fig. 3, for a compressed-air supply which communicates with a bore carrying a piston 11. The piston is forced downwardly in the cylinder by a spring 17 and a piston-rod 12 has an extension with teeth 13 for engaging the ratchet wheel 15. The upper end of the rod is pressed into engagement with the ratchet wheel by a detent 21 and spring 20. Stops 18 may be pushed into the housing to limit the stroke of the rod 12 and thus the amount of indexing movement transmitted to the work-table. Operation. On admission of compressed air through the bore 10, the cylinder 7 is forced downwardly, since the piston and rod are rendered stationary by the locked table. The locking member 6 is thus withdrawn from the notched plate 5 and the piston 11 and rod 12 are free to move upwards, rotating the table until the rod 12 strikes a stop 18. On shutting off the air supply, the reverse sequence takes place through operation of the springs 16, 17 and the table is again locked in a new position. A modified device is described having rectangular guides for the cylinder 7 and needleroller bearings therefor.
