Abstract

737,712. Automatic control systems for supply circuits of electric discharge tubes. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. April 27, 1954 [April 30, 1953], No. 12023/53. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] The electric supply to the cathode heater of a magnetron is automatically varied inversely to the mean input modulating power to the magnetron. The power fed to the magnetron circuit H, Fig. 1, from a pulse generator is proportional to the current through resistance R1 in the supply circuit to the pulse generator ; the resistance R1 is shunted by condenser C1 to provide a circuit having a long time constant, and a potential corresponding to the current is tapped from VR1 to control the heating current to the magnetron. To allow for variation of the potential of the D.C. supply to the pulse generator, the control knob is ganged to the tap on VR1. The control voltage from VR1 may be applied to the grids of alternately firing thyratrons V1, V2, Fig. 2, to vary the period during which each conducts and thus the average current delivered at H. In Fig. 3, the thyratrons V1<SP>1</SP>, V2<SP>1</SP> are biased from a separate transformer T3 over rectifiers D1, D2 and this bias is opposed by the control voltage.
