Apparatus for measuring torque comprises a pivoted lever system, one lever of which is arranged for receiving the load and another lever of which is connected to a standard spring balance there being a transmission from one of the levers to an indicating mechanism. A lever 25, Fig. 2, is pivotally mounted on a ball race in a housing integral with the casing 14 and is pivotally connected to another lever 31 by struts 45, 46 and clamping bolts 47, the lever 25 bearing on the strut 46, and the lever 31 bearing on both the lever 25 and the strut 45, the bearing surfaces being the tips of conical fulcrums, Fig. 3. One end of the lever 31 is pivotally mounted in the casing by means of conical fulcrums 36, Fig. 5, carried by a plate 32 joined to the lever 31 and bearing on a rod 41 and the casing, the plate 32 being positioned by a strut 44, and the other end is fixed to a standard spring 58, the other end of the spring being adjustably held to the casing by a rod 60. The torque to be measured is applied anticlockwise with reference to Fig. 2 to a socket member integral with lever 25, and causes lever 31 to rotate about its fulcrum 36 against the tension of the standard spring. This movement of lever 31 is transmitted by means of a bifurcated lever 80 to a link 74, thence to a lever 65 pivoted to the case at 67, and finally to a rack member 63 which engages with a pinion 64 attached to the indicator needle. Light springs to limit backlash in the transmission are fitted and the position of link 74 on lever 65 is adjustable by means of a saddle piece 70 engaged to the screw 71.
