Abstract
Sodium perborate trihydrate of the formula NaBO3.3H2O or NaBO2.H2O2.2H2O is said to be formed by stirring or otherwise agitating a suspension of sodium perborate tetrahydrate in water between normal temperature and 60 DEG C., and recovering sodium perborate trihydrate crystals. The suspension is preferably inoculated with sodium perborate trihydrate crystals obtained from a previous operation. Stabilizing agents such as magnesium silicate or stannic oxide may be added. According to an example equal parts by weight of sodium perborate tetrahydrate and water were stirred for 4 hours at 50 DEG C. and the resulting mass filtered and vacuum dried at 40 DEG C. That part of the perborate in the mother liquor was reused. The product, sodium perborate trihydate, had a melting-point of 85 DEG C., an active oxygen content of 11.7 per cent and a solubility per 100 grams of solution of 2.3 grams at 25 DEG C. and 5.7 grams at 50 DEG C. The lattice constants of the trihydrate are stated.
