Abstract

737,065. Incendiary compositions for. projectiles. AKTIEBOLAGET BOFORS. Oct. 15, 1953 [Oct. 20, 1952], No. 28492/53. Classes 9(1) and 9(2). An incendiary composition for a projectile contains a combustion means and an oxidation means in such proportions that a dust explosion is produced when the composition is ignited. The composition consists of a combustion means, which may be aluminium powder and oxidation means, which may be barium nitrate, and an explosive such as penthrite or phlegmatised penthrite, the proportions being such that there is a deficiency of the oxidation means. Proportions given as suitable are 60 per cent combustion means, 20 per cent oxidation means and 20 per cent explosive. The composition is mixed dry and a binding agent, e.g. nitrocellulose mixed with resin dissolved in ethyl acetate, added in a kneading machine. The kneaded mixture is sifted through a mesh of the appropriate grain size and then dried to evaporate the ethyl' acetate. Projectiles are then filled in stages with the granulated composition, each increment being pressed to the required density and fuzes are then fitted to the projectiles.
