Abstract

736,854. Cathode - ray tube mountings. CINEMA-TELEVISION, Ltd. Aug. 28, 1952 [Aug. 29, 1951], No. 20406/51. Class 40 (3). A mounting for supporting a discharge tube relatively to an optical system has separate means for adjusting the tube in three directions linearly at right angles and by rotation about two axis at right-angles to each other and to the axis of the optical system. In Fig. 2 the heavy barrel 5 of the optical system carries two pivot screws 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, and spring steel arms 7, 71, the upper ends of which are attached to brackets 8, 8<SP>1</SP> on opposite sides of the gimbal ring 9 to give the latter translational and rotational movement relative to the barrel. The translational screw A has its end held in the jaws of bracket 10 which form a curved slot to allow the rotational adjustment. Brackets 15, 15<SP>1</SP> are pivoted at 14, 14<SP>1</SP> to ring 9 and have slots with curvature centred at O on the axis 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, pins 16 on the arms 17 secured to the second gimbal ring 18 moving in these slots under the action of screw D. A cylindrical member 19 holding the screw D can turn in the bracket 15<SP>1</SP>. The tripod 21 supported by ring 18 terminates in a ring and spider assembly 22, 23 and a clamp 24 which engages a long insulating tube 25 supporting the discharge device. A screw held in the ring 22 coacts with a nut on the clamping ring 24 to give longitudinal adjustment of the tube 25. Clamping rings and screws 32, 33, 35, support the discharge device 26 in the tube 25. A screw B (Fig. 3, not shown) which is rotationally and slidably held on gimbal ring 18 works in a nut which is rotatable and slidable in a bracket attached to the ring 9 and gives adjustment in a direction at right-angles to that obtained by the leaf-springs 7, 7<SP>1</SP>. The use of control B demands a correction of the rotational adjustment about pivots 6, 6<SP>1</SP> and to avoid this interaction the construction is modified by replacing pivot pins 14, 14<SP>1</SP> by pins moving in straight slotted guides. Interaction is also avoided with some loss of rigidity by the modification of Fig. 5 in which the gimbal rings are co-planar and are linked by pairs of leaf-springs 40-40<SP>1</SP>, 41-41<SP>1</SP>. The adjusting screw B works in a nut held captive in an arcuate slot in bracket 47 and gives translatory movement between the two rings. Screw E, which is captive in a member 50 pivoted in a bracket 51 integral with ring 9, gives translatory movement between the latter and the barrel 5.
