Abstract

Carbon monoxide and hydrogen are produced by mixing a gas comprising or consisting of a hydrocarbon such as methane with oxygen (air), bringing the mixture into contact with a nickel- or cobalt-containing catalyst, preferably on a magnesite base, and bringing the products into contact at elevated temperature with a catalyst containing iron (but no nickel), the quantity of oxygen (air) used being such that a part of the hydrocarbon remains to be oxidized in the second stage, and the first stage being continued until substantially no free oxygen remains. In normal operation the first stage catalyst amounts to about 20 per cent by volume of the total catalyst. A space between the reaction zones is preferred, but the catalysts may be located in a single reaction chamber, e.g. a tubular or tower-like chamber in a heating oven. If a product free from, or poor in, nitrogen is required, pure oxygen or air of increased oxygen content is employed, steam then preferably being added to the initial reactants. The catalyst for the first stage may be produced by impregnating burnt magnesite with nickel nitrate, heating the product and treating with hydrogen: the second catalyst may be prepared by burning iron filings mixed with activating ingredients such as clay or magnesium oxide, mixing the resultant melt, cooling, comminuting and reducing with technical hydrogen at 400-500 DEG C.
