Abstract

736,391. Making glass phials &c. GUSTI, A. Feb. 8, 1950 [Feb. 8, 1949], No. 3235/50. Class 56. A rotary or linear machine for the manufacture from glass tubing of phials or the like has a conduit 10 for supplying compressed air in the bottom forming operation which has at its end a plunger-like body operable within the interior of the tube, air being passed between the plunger and the bottom of the tube while the latter is still heated to transform the bottom of the tube to semi-spherical shape. The glass tube is heated, drawn out, formed with a neck, and cut by burners, whereupon the phial is released and the remaining tube heated at the bottom, blown to form the rounded base, cooled and lowered on to a spring support which is adjustable to give the required length for making the phial. The rounded base is then gripped for a repetition of the cycle. The machine shown has eight mandrels located in a frame formed of uprights 2, lower plate 3, and upper ring 1. The gas and air distributers are formed by a disc 4 fixed to the centre shaft 5, a lower disc 6 which rotates with disc 3, and four concentric rings 13-16 therebetween. Arcuate grooves 28 are provided in the rings 13-15, each with a central threaded hole to receive a tube 14a conducting the gas mixture. Ring .16 has an arcuate groove 16a adjustable by displaceable blocks 17, 18 and connected by pipe 19a via regulator 19 to an air compressor. Rings 13-16 are independently angularly adjustable. As disc 6 rotates holes 20 therein communicate with the arcuate grooves 28 and respectively with necking burners, cutting burners, and the burners for heating the base of the tube, and eight equally-spaced holes 29 each connected to a pipe 8 communicate with groove 16a, the duration of these communications depending on the length of the grooves and the timing on the positioning of rings 13-16. The tubes 8, attached to ring 1, are provided with cocks 9, and connected by means of a rubber pipe 21 with the tubular extension 10 of the shaft which grips the glass tube 12. Tube 10 terminates in a piston 11 which is inserted in the rotating glass tube and has circular channels forming the air-tight body. This piston may be replaced by a rubber cap 27 which is deformed under air pressure to form an air-tight seal, the cap conveniently being of conical form so that it may be cut to suit the diameter of the glass tube. Groove 16a communicates with the atmosphere to prevent deformation of the tube by the dilation of air remaining in the tube.
