To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN S. WORTH, a citizen pf the United States, residing in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Machines `for Shaping Metal Plates, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a machine for rapidly and accurately shapinmetal plates.
y invention is especially ada ted for making a very deep dish in lar e p ates, although the invention is applica lev for other uses.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1, is a vertical sectional view' on the line 1-1, Fig. 3, of my improved machine; Fig. 2, is a verticalfsectional view-on the line 2-2, Fig. 3; Fig. 3, is a plan view on the 20 line 3-3, Fig. 4; Fig. 4, is a .vertical sectional view on the line 4 4, Fig. 3, showing the central part of the machine omitted; Fig. 5, is a plan view of the upper Vportion of the machine; Fig. 6, is a plan view of the ydished former; Figs. .7, 8 and 9, show different steps in the process of dishing a plate; Fi rs. 10 and 11, are views showing the steps anti the methods ofmaking the flanged opening inthe dished plate; Fi 12, is a sectional view of a plate dishe cut and flangedby my improved machine; Fig. 13, is a detail view of the water supply ipe leading to the central movable cylin ers; Fig. 14, is a diagram perspective view showing the counter alance mechanism; Fi 15, is a view of a ortion of the counterba ance mechanism; Fig. 16, is an enlarged view of the upper head of the machine; Fig. 17, is an enlarged view of the lower head of the machine; Fig. 18, is a diagram view showing the paths of the different rolls; Fig. 19, is a` view of the water supply pi es leading to the two side cylinders; and ig. 20, is an enlarged view showing the corrugated flange of the ,formen Before explaining the. details of the machine I will describe in general its operation. y
' A flat plate previously heated, preferably in osition in the machine over a central lpin an resting on the flanges of a dis ed former. Two sets of ressure rolls are used to force the body o the plate gradually into the former, and rolls above the ianges having a perforation in the center, is placedV of the former tend to keep the edges of the late down upon the anges and as the plate 1s dished there are vertically arranged rolls wlhich prevent buckling of the edges of the p ate. 4 60 After the plate has been forced down so as to conform to the' shape of the former, and if it is desired to make an openin in the slate, a central cutter is used whic cuts a isk out of the bottom o'f the dished late 66 and then a flange may be formed, if desired, by continuing the downward movement of the head, the Harige is turned outward on the dished late, as clearly shown in the sectional view, Fig. 123 The plate is prefer- 70 ably dished in two heats; the plate-being partially dished on the first heat and after it is reheated it is completely dished, as shown, although in some instances a plate ma be, dished with a single heat. 75
ferring in the first instance to Fi s. 1 to 5, inclusive, A, A are the standards w ich are mounted on suitable foundations and supporting the transverse beams B. A', A' are extensions ofthe standards supporting the to frame B'. B2,'B2 are heavy beams exten ing transversely from one standard A to the other directly above the foundation and these beams su ort the mechanism of the dished former w ich forms the lower die of the machine.
I will first explain the mechanism for supporting and o eratin the dished former. The transverse earns 2 have depending saddles B? and a bearing b extends from one beam B2 to the other and astep bearing b' is carried by the saddles. Mounted in the bearings is a hollow shaft C having an annula'r iange c near its upper edge sup orting the head C to which is secure the dished former D. This former has a central opening as shown, so that a hole can be punched in the dished plate and lian ed by the mechanism described hereafter. n the upper edge of the former is a flan e d upon which theV plate to be punched is placed. This flange is preferably made separate from the former as illustrated in the large figures of the drawings.
The shaft C is driven from adrivin shaft C2 through a inion c and a gear w eel c2. The lower end) of the shaft is adapted to a step bearing b of any ordinary type, in the present instance rings on the bearing are adapted to grooves on the shaft. Extending adjustable rod lE carrying a pin e at its the cylinder.
upper end. This pin has fa screw threaded shank adapted to a threaded opening in the end of the rod. Also carried by this rod E is a. head E supporting a series of rings e', c2. The inner ring e2 has a head e3 and it has a ange resting upon the reduced ortion of the head E', as clearly shown in ig.
11.- This head e forms the lower cutter of the shears for cutting the plate. The vertically arranged rings e carry an annular head e4 which acts as a filler between the .edge of the dished former D and the cutter head es. When it is desired to make openings of different .diameters in the dished plate the head and the rings e4 can be removed and others of di'erent' sizes fsub,
stituted for them machine. i
The rod E and its head E are arranged to move vertically and this lvertical movement is accomplished through a plunger E2 extending through the lower bearing b of the shaft C and bearing upon the end of the rod E. The lower end of this plunger is adapted to a cylinder E3 which is suspended from the saddle B3, as shown clearly in Figs.
without dismantling the 1 and 2. This cylinder in the present 1nstance is' a hydraulic cylinder and water under pressure is admitted to thev cylinder through the controlling mechanism within easy reach of the operator, so that when it is desired to lift the head E water is admitted to the cylinder and the plunger is forced upward, carrying with it the rod and head, and
the head can be lowered to any degree desired by allowing the water to escape from The head is raised to bring the .pin above the: line of the plunger of the be readily removed -from the machine and itis also used when the plate is removed for the reheating, when necessary.
Carried by the transverse beams B is a hydraulic cylinder F in which is a plunger` F having a reduced portion F2 'which extends through a stuiing box in the cap f of the cylinder F. Mounted on the lower end of the plunger F is a head G and this head has a iange g which is shaped to conform to the finished plate, as shown in Fig. 11. The connection of this head is such as to allow it to freely turn on the end of the plunger and also carried by the plunger is a frame G' having arms which carry two conical rollers g which press upon the plate and aid in dishing it.
On the endof the extension F2 is a cross head f connected by rods f2 to a cylinder F3 in which is a plunger la, connected to a rod H extending throu h the plungerF and extension F2 and coup ed to a cutter head H having an annular flange h provided with a knife which operates in conjunction with the head eB to shear the plate and form two flanges on the rod and this cross head is connected toplungers z' adapted to cylinders I', one on each side of the main cylinder F, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
Water under pressure is admitted to the several cylinders through valves placed in` easy reach of the operator. On each side of 'aty the main cylinder F is a slide J adapted to Ways on the beam B and the slides are operated in unison by a screw shaft J adapted to bearings in brackets on the beam B and v driven preferably by an electric motor through suitable reverse gearing, so'that the slides can be moved toward and from the main cylinder F.
. Carried by the slides J are guide frames J a sup orting hydraulic cylinders J 2 and adapte to each cylinder is a plunger K having an extension K', said extension beingk forked at the lower end and carrying a swivel ,bearing c for the presser roller Ic".
The periphery of these presser rolls is curved ias shown so as to conform to the finished plate, as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 9. dished former so that the plate with the As soon as water under pressure is ex- :hausted from the cylmders J 2 counterweights L return the plungers and the rolls lc. to thel raised osition clear of the dished former. The etail construction of the :counterweight mechanism will lbe described hereafter. v
Mounted on the foundation are radial guide frames M, four in the present in.- stance, as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, on each of which is mounted a slide N. A feed.
screw mis adapted to bearings inthe 'frame M and to a nut m mounted on the carriage N, so that on turning this feed screw the carriage is moved toward and from the center of the machine. geared together so that they will turn in unison, the gearing being similar to the' gearing by which the several shafts n and p are driven, .as illustrated in Fig.y 3.'
of each' frame M and arranged to support the rear ends of theshafts n and p.
Adapted to move vertically on the slide N is a carrier N 'having a'stud n on which is The feed screws m are 125 M is a fixed standard secured to the rear mountedthe roller n* which is arranged to press the plate down upon the flange of the dished former. This carrier can be vertically adjusted by means of a screw n' geared to the shaft n and driven by any suitable mechanism, preferably by an electric motor, and the shafts n are coupled by shafts a* so tliat they' will work in unison, although they may be driven independently if desired. Also mounted on the slide N is a carrier P having a bracket p carryin a vertical stud p2 on which is mounte a roller p of the shape clearly illustrated in Figs. 4 and 9. This roller is arranged to press upon the inner edge of the partially dished late so as to force it against the dishedoriner and prevent it from bucklin asit is being forced into the former, an the carrier P can be raised and lowered by a screw shaft p* which engages the nut on the carrier and is driven by the shaft p from au electric motor or other power.
Thus it will be seenthat the two series of rollers n2 and p can be controlled at will so as to keep tension on the plate and revent it buckling. In practice the several s afts p are geared together by shafts p and'opei'ated from a single electric motor, the switch of which is placed within easy reach of the operator as is also the switch mechanism for turning the current on the motor controlling the shaft n as well as the shaft m for causing the slides to move to and from the center of the machine.
lfVhen it is wished to center a late in the machine, which is not perforate I may use the rollers p oirollers n* on the carriers N, Fig. 4.
In order to allow for the adjustment of the cylinders J 2 toward and from the center of the machine, so as to brin the rolls k in proper relation to the dis ed former, I mount two cylindrical casings R, Fig. 19, on the upper cross beam B and freel passing through each casing is a tube r. boxes are located at each end of each cyl inder so as to prevent the escape of water under pressure. Each tube has an opening as at r so as to form a communication between tlie interior of the tube and the interior of the cylindrical casing. The tube is connected to a tubular bracket r2 attached to one end of a cylinder J2, so that if the cylinder is moved toward and from the center of the machine the tube 1- will slide freely in the cylindrical. casing R. By this means I am enabled to make a xed connection between the cylindrical casings and the water supply pipe which extends to a point within easy reach of the operator. j I
In order to pro erly balance the rollers c and the carriers and plunger, I provide the mechanism which is clearly illustrated in Figs. 1, 14 and 15. On the portions J3 of the slides J are four sets of rollers 's around which pass theropes Z and l. These ropes are looped and pass around sheaves a on a cross head S secured to the lower portion of the plunger K. The ropes Z, l pass around the sheaves s2, s respectively, and'aroiind sheaves s* at the opposite side of the machine and down to sheaves s, s respectively, and are attached to rods mounted in spring boxes S. The sheaves s are mounted on a hollow weight L, while the sheaves s are mounted on a weight L ada ted to rest within the weight L. Both of t ese weights are preferably hollow and can be 'filled to properly balance the plungers and -rolls. When it is desired to move the rolls in unison then a pin Z2 is inserted in the openings in both weights so as to attach them together, but by simply drawing this pin each weight will move independently.
It will be noticed on referring to Fig. 16 that I preferably make the cutting edge of the knife h on the head H curvedl so that it will make a shear cut when moved past the blade on the Ihead e, thus making it easier to o crate than where the two blades are perfect y straight.
'il hile I prefer to mount the pin e on the lower head E, as shown in the drawings? and provide an openin for the insertion o the pin in the head Hg2 I may in some instances secure the pin in the head H and allow it to project into the opening in the lower head E. The pin will center the late if mounted in either head, but in some 'while the roller n holds the instances the pin may be dispensed with.
In the diagram, Fig. 18, I have shown the four rollers c, g', p3 and n2 all in line to illustrate that the paths of the three rolls which form the dish overlap each other late down Iupon the flan e of the dished ormer and the head G ho ds the center of the plate also d own upon the former, thus makin a con-V tinuous ressure upon the center of t e plate to its e ge. The overlapping of the paths 'of the rolls prevents the creasing of the 1 plate to a considerable extent and when the mechanism is properl operated there will 'be no buckling and t e plate will be perfectly dished.
The invention is particularly adapted for l dishinglarge plates, such as plates 8'feet in the proper de ee in a suitable furnace. The
central head is preferably raised so that it is on a line with the flange d of the dished former D, thenthe plate is taken from the furnace and placed so that the pin -e will project through the hole n the plate and the late will rest upon the head E and the iiange d of the former. The machlne 1s then set in motion, the dished former 1s rotated with the plate'and then the rollsl lo are lowered in contact'with the plate,- pressin n upon the plate near the eriphery, as indicated in Fig. 7 the head pressmg the vcentral portion of the plate at the'same time lift the rollers c and the head G out of contact with the plate, raising the central plate E and lifting the plate clear of the former when it is transferred from the machine and reheated inthe furnace. -.After reheating it is brought again to the machine and placed on the head E', which is lowered and both the rollers la and g are brought in. contact with thel plate and the heads E and G are moved .downward as the. dish is formed. As shown in Fig. 8
, both the rolls c and g simply rotate upon vbe cut at any point in the stroke.
their axes, while the-former D, with the late, rotates rapidly` around the center. en the dish is almost finished the rollers p3 press against the plate near its periphery so as to preventbuckling as the metal is drawn into the former, as at this point the rolls n2 lose control of the plate.
Afterthe plate is completely dished, as
vshown in Fig. 9, and it is desired to perforate and iiange the dished plate then the cutter H is brought down onto the plate, making a shear cut through the plate, the opening conforming to the shape of the cutter H and the head e2, Fig. 10. The cylinder for actuating the cutter, being carried by the upper plunger, the plate can As the movement of the cutter head continues the roundedv edge 71,2 is forced into the -portion of the plate overhangi'ng the ring e'i l'and thus the ange is bent outward as indicated in Figs. 11 and 12, although in some instances it will not be necessary or desirable to make an opening and iange-the plate and, in some cases, it will only be necessary to make an opening in the plate. lThe flanged plate is thenraised outvof the former by simplyv elevating the head E', backing olf the rollers, thehead G and elevating the head G', after which it can be .readily removed from the .machine and the operation can then be repeated uponV another plate.
mder toa fixed tubular ipe, connecting the top end x pipe V, so that the cylinder 'F can be raised l,
and lowered and yet the supply of water to the cylinder will not be interrupted.
In Fig. 20, I have shown the flange d of the former D provided with a series of grooves in its upper surface, so that any scale that should collect on theflange will pass into the grooves, thus insuring an'even surface for the plate to rest upon. In the specication I have alluded to the pin as centering the plate, but this is not absolutely necessary and is only used when it is immaterial whether a plate is perforated or not. By utilizing the pin I save time in centering, but the plate may be centered by special rollers n* carried bythe radially movable carriages, or may be centered by the roller p3, as noted above. The centering pin, however, is useful in bring-l ing the cutters of the .upper and lower dies in alinement so y as to insure a clean cut when a hole is to be cut in a plate, but the pin may be dispensed with in this instance where the two parts are accurately iitted.
The rollers carried by the plungers and head may be arranged in a diiferent manner from that shown, one roller may be independent of the a' other and arranged at a greater distance vfrom the center than the other, and the vertically arranged rollers may be of dierent shapes, depending upon the character ofwork to bev produced by the machine.
