Abstract

736,133. Filters. PUROLATOR PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 1, 1953, No. 26949/53. Class 46. A filter element is fabricated by pleating a strip of filter paper transversely to its length, rolling the strip into an annulus composed of a single layer and having its axis parallel to the line of the pleats, providing adhesive material for adhering the ends of the pleats to annular end caps, applying solvent material to the adhesive material and capping the ends of the pleats with annular end caps. In Fig. 2, tapes 4, 5 of adhesive material (soluble in an appropriate solvent) are applied to the edges of filter paper 1. The paper is then pleated, in the manner shown, either before or after cutting off a length which is thereafter rolled. The edges of the tapes appearing at the ends of the annulus thus formed are moistened with the solvent and caps 8, 9, Fig. 4, preferably of heavy cardboard are applied. In Fig. 5, tapes 13 of an adhesive material which may be stretched in its own plane are applied to the edges of already pleated paper 1 and lengths of the paper thereafter rolled into annular form. Caps are applied as before. In a further modification an annular disc of adhesive is applied to the inside of each end cap, the free surface is moistened with solvents and the caps are applied to the ends of a pleated annulus. Many examples of adhesive materials and corresponding solvents are given.
