A permanent-way rail fastening comprises a wooden plug 1 embedded in the sleeper, e.g. of reinforced concrete, and having a cylindrical bore 19 for a screw 3. The threads of the screw are such that the angle which the flank 7 facing the head-end 6 makes with the normal to the axis of the screw is greater than the angle which the flank 8 makes with said normal. The angles lie within the ranges 45 to 55 degrees, and 10 to 25 degrees, respectively and are preferably 55 and 15 degrees. The crest 13 of the thread may be flattened or rounded. The plug may have a slot 18 or diametrically-opposed slots transverse to the longitudinal axis of the sleeper.
