A needling machine of the kind comprising a series of barbed needles which are reciprocated by suitable means and feed and delivery rollers by which a base and blanket of fibres are moved past the needles so that the latter force or draw sufficient fibres through the base to secure the blanket to the base is characterized in that the feed and delivery rollers are constantly rotated and are carried by a frame mounted to partake of a rocking movement, this movement being such that the travel of the base and blanket transverse to the needles is interrupted when the needles are moving therethrough. As shown a lower drive shaft b carried in suitable bearings attached to the end frames d of the machine drives the rollers h, l<SP>1</SP>, n, t, u, p and q and carries at each end a swivelling end frame g. Rollers h and l<SP>1</SP> feed in a length of hessian or other base material m and roller n feeds in a blanket o of fibres to be needled to the base m. Rollers t and u close up to the needles s ensure a uniform thickness of the blanket passing under the needles. The needles s are carried by a needle carrier R to which a vertical reciprocating movement is imparted by an upper drive shaft a through cranks and connecting rods k. The shaft a also drives, eccentrically, rods j coupled to the swivelling end frames g and so imparts a swivelling movement to these frames about the shaft b. The timing of the operations is such that when the needles are passing through the base material m the swivelling end frames move the whole roller system backwards thus compensating for the forward feed movement of the base and blanket such that there is no relative transverse movement between the needles and the base. A second embodiment shows an arrangement whereby the needles project upwards, passing through the base material first and the blanket of fibres second, the downward movement of the needles being used to needle the blanket to the base material.
