Abstract
735,532. Conductors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 23, 1952 [Oct. 31, 1951], No. 26620/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 36. [Also in Group VIII] A conductor is insulated with an adhesive fibrous tape of inorganic material, such as asbestos, spun glass or spun quartz, which is impregnated with a copolymer of acrylic acid esters and is first coated with a pre-condensed resinous product obtained by reacting an acidic unsaturated polyester and an epoxide resin and then coated with a reaction product of an acidic polyester of a non-polymerizable dicarboxylic acid with an epoxide resin. After application to the conductor, which may itself first be made adhesive, the coated tape is heated under pressure to convert the resinous products to a solid, infusible state. The tape may first be impregnated with starch solution and dried, after which it is impregnated with, for example, a solution in toluene of a copolymer of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate and the solvent evaporated. The first coating material may comprise the resinous reaction product of ethylene glycol maleate and an epoxide resin, as described in Specification 735,531, [Group IV (a)]. In order to prevent the coated tape sticking to itself before application to the conductor, it is further coated with a powder consisting of the reaction product of an acidic polyester of a non-polymerizable dicarboxylic acid with an epoxide resin, as described in Specification 732,253, [Group VIII]. The application of heat and pressure to the wrapped conductor consolidates the coatings and converts them to the solid infusible state.
