Abstract

735,386. Heavy-ion-beam tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 1, 1953 [May 6, 1952], No. 12131/53. Class 39 (1). In a mass spectrometer the ion beam is analysed by directing the beam against a collector electrode which emits electrons and the electrons are directed to a Geiger-Muller tube or crystal counter which is connected to an indicator system. The electrons emitted at the electrode 4 by impact of the ion beam 1 may be accelerated by a series of apertured electrodes, Fig. 1 (not shown), or as shown, focused in crossed electric and magnetic fields on to the mica window of the Geiger-Muller tube 8. The electrons are further accelerated by an electrode 13 which is surrounded by a screening cap 16. The collector electrode may consist of or be coated with a material which emits electrons copiously on impact by ions, e.g. beryllium. A crystal counter may be constituted by a crystal which becomes fluorescent or conductive under the action of electrons, the indicator being for example a photo-sensitive member with an amplifier or a counter for counting current pulses.
