Abstract

735,342. Storing gases under pressure. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 9, 1953 [Jan. 9, 1952], No. 681/52. Class 8 (2). A transport vessel for liquid ethylene comprises an inner metal container A, Fig. 1, capable of withstanding an internal pressure up to 20 atmospheres and a temperature of - 100‹ C. and is lagged with thermal insulation D so that under normal temperatures over a normal transit period of up to 10 days the internal pressure does not exceed the operating value of a vent J, Fig. 2, viz. between 10 and 15 atmospheres. The container body is formed of welded rolled nickel steel sheets and spun dished end plates and the insulation is non- water-absorbent, e.g. expanded rubber sheathed by polished aluminium alloy E. The venting valve J, a safety valve K, a valved filling and emptying pipe G and a valve H for releasing ethylene gas during filling and introducing gas during emptying are located in a header cap C charged with methanol to prevent freezing of said valves. Valves J, K open to atmosphere through a flame trap. The insulated container is tied to a road vehicle having a pressure indicator L in the driver's cab.
