Abstract

The crimp of a longitudinally crimped gelled fibre of an acrylonitrile polymerization product, containing at least 35 per cent by weight of combined acrylonitrile, is stabilized by contacting the longitudinally crimped fibre with a fluid medium comprising water or steam at a temperature above 100 DEG C. but not exceeding 150 DEG C. The treatment may be carried out under acid conditions and in such case the colour and colour stability of the fibre are also improved. Longitudinally crimped fibres are those which have been crimped by subjecting them to longitudinal compression. The fibres may be obtained by cutting continuous filaments which have been produced by extruding a solution of an acrylonitrile polymerization product into a cold, liquid coagulant comprising water at a temperature not exceeding +10 DEG C. The water-swollen aquagel filaments may be stretched in presence of water at 70-110 DEG C. The acrylonitrile polymerization product may be a copolymer of acrylonitrile with a vinyl ester, vinyl or vinylidene chloride or fluoride, allyl alcohol, an allyl ester or acrylic or methacrylic acid or an ester or amide thereof, or it may be a copolymer of acrylonitrile with isobutylene or with an ester of an alpha or beta unsaturated polycarboxylic acid such as maleic, fumaric or citraconic acid. The molecular weight of the polymer may be 15,000-300,000. In an example, a solution of a copolymer of 95 per cent acrylonitrile and 5 per cent methyl acrylate in aqueous calcium thiocyanate is extruded into cold water and the filaments obtained are stretched at 100 DEG C. while immersed in water. The filaments are then submerged in cold water and stored in wet state until required for stapling and crimping. A swatch of fibres obtained from these filaments is crimped by compressing it longitudinally, while in gel state, in a cylindrical brass tube, 0.25 inch in diameter. The crimped swatch is removed and placed in an autocalve in which it is steamed for 30 minutes at 50 lbs. per sq. inch gauge pressure. It is then removed and dried in warm air. In another example, the swatch of fibres is soaked in dilute hydrochloric acid solution prior to the crimping and the solution is adjusted so that a pH of about 2.6 prevails during the crimping and the subsequent crimp stabilization, which is performed in the presence of steam under pressure. In another example, the acidified and crimped swatch of fibres is immersed in dilute hydrochloric acid of pH 2.6 and the containing vessel is placed in an autoclave in which it is steamed for 30 minutes at a gauge pressure of 50 lbs. per sq. p inch. Specifications 594,999, 672,775 and 735,183 are referred to.
