Abstract

734,979. Folding chairs. BLACKBURN & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and BRUMBY, H. April 29, 1954 [May 15, 1953], No. 13715/53. Class 52 (2). A collapsible passenger chair for aircraft comprises a pair of substantially triangular light alloy girder members 1, secured at their apices to the floor, which are spaced apart by a transverse channel section member 5 at their upper ends. A pair of struts 22 pivoted to members 1 support them at an angle. A brace member 6 extends diagonally between members 1. Triangular sub-girders 7 are pivoted at 9 to parts 10 which are bolted at 11, 12 to the main girders 1. The girders 7 carry a back supporting tubular frame 13 holding a light alloy dished metal plate 14 faced with detachable fabric-covered sponge rubber 15. A seat comprising a tubular frame 17 holding a light alloy metal dished plate 18 faced with fabriccovered sponge rubber 19 pivots at 16 on the girders 1 and is supported by toggle struts 20 connected from the side members to the apices of the girders 1. Parts 25 connected to the sub-girders 7, slide in slots 26 in girders 1 and are latched in alternative positions by a bolt 27 which is controlled in its movement by a lever 36 through a spring, cable, lever mechanism 28-34 (Fig. 4). A spring connected between the girders 1 and the side members of the supporting frame aids in reaching the upright position, but resists the reclining position. A light alloy arm-rest 38, socketed to receive the arm of a detachable table and apertured for an ashtray, is pivoted to the part 10. Arm-rest 38 is upholstered with fabric covered sponge rubber. The seat may be folded flat by breaking the toggle strut 20, collapsing the struts 22 and swinging up the arm-rests. If a bank or two is to be formed, respective parts 10 are bolted together and a wider arm-rest replaces the two individual ones. In a modification, Fig. 8, the arm-rest forging 43 is pivoted to integral lugs 42 of the girders 1 with the subgirders 7 directly pivoted at 44 to the girders 1 struts 45 replace the toggle struts 20.
