Abstract
734,702. Thermometers. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Dec. 16, 1953 [Dec. 16, 1952], No. 31915/52. Class 97 (3). [Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXVTII] The mean temperature of a moving stream of gas passing through a duct 10 is measured by a thermocouple or other temperature-sensitive element 15a situated in a tube or mixing chamber 13 which projects into the gas stream. The tube has a number of openings 19 situated at different levels so that samples of the gas from different parts of the stream pass into the tube and become mixed. The mixture leaves by an opening 20 near the thermocouple 15a. The opening 20 may be situated at the lower end of the tube or outside the duct 10 in which case it may lead directly into the atmosphere or to an apparatus for maintaining a low pressure at the opening to cause the gas in the tube 13 to flow at a predetermined rate over the thermocouple 15a irrespective of the rate of flow of the gas in the duct' 10. In a modification the tube 13 is divided by a vertical partition to provide a longer path for the gas mixture. Fig. 5 shows a further modification in which an outer perforated tube 17b encloses a tube 17a having an opening 20 at its lower end and enclosing the thermocouple 15a. The mixing chamber may be housed in a blade of a rotating turbine disc or as shown in Fig. 6, in a stationary nozzle guide vane 28 of an internal combustion engine which is formed with an axial bore 32 containing the thermocouple 33 and with holes 36 along the leading edge of the blade. Mixed gases in the bore 32 pass over the thermocouple and back into the main stream through passages 37 in the vane. When the mixing chamber is formed in a rotating blade the cable of the thermocouple passes through a bore in the blade root and is connected to sliprings.
