Abstract

Textile fibres (e.g. of cotton, rayon, wool, polyamides and polyurethanes) are whitened by treatment with oxyalkyl derivatives of compounds of the formula <FORM:0734433/IV (c)/1> where X is hydrogen, amino or acylamino and the benzene rings may be further substituted. Specified products are those obtained by condensing ethylene oxide with 4 : 41-di-(p-aminobenzoylamino)-stilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid and 4 - (p - aminobenzoylamino) - 41 - benzoylamino - stilbene - 2 : 21 - disulphonic acid, and propylene oxide with the former compound. Other products are mentioned.ALSO:The invention comprises the hydroxyalkyl derivatives obtained by acting on stilbene derivatives of the formula <FORM:0734433/IV (b)/1> (x=hydrogen or amino; the benzoyl radicals may contain further substituents such as alkyl or alkoxy) with compounds containing the grouping <FORM:0734433/IV (b)/2> or <FORM:0734433/IV (b)/3> The symmetrical starting materials are obtained by acylating 4 : 41-diaminostilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid with nitroaroyl halides and then reducing the nitro groups. Such a starting material may, if desired, be mono-acylated, e.g. with acetic anhydride, benzoyl chloride or substituted benzoyl chloride, cinnamoyl chloride or phenoxyacetyl chloride. In the examples 4 : 41 - di - (p - aminobenzoylamino) - stilbene - 2 : 21-disulphonic acid is treated with ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, ethylene chlorhydrin and epichlorhydrin, and 4-(p-aminobenzoylamino) - 41 - benzoylamino - stilbene - 2 : 21 - disulphonic acid is treated with ethylene oxide. The following stilbene derivatives may also be treated: 4 : 41 - di - (o - aminobenzoylamino), 4 : 41 - di - (4 - amino - 3 - methylbenzoylamino), 4 : 41 - di - (3 : 5 - diaminobenzoylamino), 4 : 41-di - (2 - methoxy - 4 - aminobenzoylamino, and the following containing a 41-benzoylamino group: 4-(o-aminobenzoylamino), 4-(m-aminobenzoylamino), 4 - (3 : 5 - diaminobenzoylamino) and 4 - (4 - methoxy - 3 - aminobenzoylamino). When ethylene oxide is used in excess a polyglycol residue can be introduced. The products are optical bleaching agents.ALSO:Fluorescent brightening agents comprising oxyalkyl derivatives of compounds of the formula <FORM:0734433/III/1> where X is hydrogen, amino or acylamino and the benzene rings may be further substituted, are incorporated in soaps. Suitable compounds are mentioned.
