Abstract

Sheet materials, e.g. package blanks and labels of paper, regenerated cellulose film or aluminium foil, are joined by contacting faces, at least one of which has been coated with a styrenated alkyd resin in an organic solvent and air-dried, preferably force dried to a tack-free surface, and applying heat and pressure at the joint, e.g. by a bar or roller at 110-150 DEG C. for not more than 5 seconds. The resin may be prepared from polyhydric alcohols such as glycerine, glycol and pentaerythritol, polybasic carboxylic acids such as phthalic and maleic acids, and drying oils such as linseed, wood, oiticica, fish, dehydrated castor and soya oils, and drying oil fatty acids, with or without rosin. Examples describe the preparation of alkyds from (1), (2) and (3) castor oil, rosin, glycerol and phthalic anhydride and rosin; and (5) chinawood oil, a fatty acid, glycerine, and phthalic anhydride, followed by refluxing with styrene in solution in toluene, xylene or a mixed aromatic solvent using t-butyl hydroperoxide as catalyst.
