Abstract

734,067. Electric condensers. HERAEUS GES., W. C. June 25, 1953 [June 26, 1952], No. 17640/53. Class 37. In electrolytic condensers having tantalum electrodes the conductivity is improved by forming the anode as a composite body of sintered tantalum powder and solid tantalum. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) the mass of sintered tantalum 21 is associated with a solid tantalum rod 13 with two end-plates 22a, 22b, and optional intermediate plates 22c, 22d, 22e. In other embodiments the embedded part of the rod 13 may be root-shaped, or star cross-section (Fig. 4), the vanes 34 being optionally apertured or may comprise a helix of tantalum wire, preferably wound round a tantalum cylinder, with the wire protruding to form the connecting lug. In another form (Fig. 7) the solid tantalum is a hollow cylinder 62 embedded in the sintered body 61, a pin 63 forming the connecting lug. The counter-electrode 65 of silver or silver-plated copper is cup-shaped, the intervening space being filled with electrolyte, e.g. lithium chloride, and sealed with a lid 66 and insulating ring 64. The solid body 62 may alternatively be a plate, possibly perforated or of net construction, or may consist of a solid or net cylinder surrounding a cylinder or rod: of sintered tantalum.
