Abstract

[Also in Division H1] In a method of producing a metal pellet type porous capacitor anode metal particles are pressed to form a plurality of individual porous metal discs, after which the discs are partially sintered and then assembled and welded together in stacked relationship with interposed spacing members. Thereafter the sintering of the discs is completed. The preferred anode material is tantalum, but aluminium, zirconium and niobium or mixtures thereof may be used. The spacing members may take the form of raised bosses on the discs or alternatively consist of small rings of the same or a compatible metal. Each sintered disc is provided with a thin coating of tantalum oxide to serve as the capacitor dielectric. A solid electrolytic capacitor according to the invention employs a manganese dioxide layer as the electrolyte coated on a tantalum anode of 39% porosity. On the manganese dioxide layer is disposed a layer of carbon particles, and on this an outer electrode of sprayed copper, zinc, tin, silver or gold. Encapsulation of the assembly may be in silica filled epoxy or mineral filled phenol formaldehyde resin, or in vitreous enamel or a hermetically sealed metal can potted in wax. In a wet electrolytic capacitor the anode may be contained in a silver can using a lithium chloride or sulphuric acid electrolyte, the can being closed by a P.T.F.E. plug and containing spacers of suitable elastomers to hold the anode. Specification 747,051 is mentioned.
