Abstract

A liquid partially-condensed hydrophilic phenol-formaldehyde resin is prepared by charging to a vessel equipped with a reflux condenser, agitator, and thermometer phenol (90 per cent) and 36.8 per cent aqueous formaldehyde in an approximate mol. ratio 1 : 1 : 2, together with diethylene glycol and a basic catalyst, particularly Ba(OH)28H2O. The mixture is uniformly heated and vacuum is applied to dehydrate the mass. Various temperatures and times of heating and dehydration are quoted to obtain stated viscosities and water tolerances. The liquid resin mixed with the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid is used for presizing a woven fabric backing in making abrasive cloth. The liquid resin, further advanced, and mixed with various proportions of calcium carbonate filler, having an average surface diameter 14.7 microns as described in Specification 576,308, ethylene glycol and the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid and thinned with water is used for the making and sand-sizing coats of the abrasive sheet.
