733,873. Electric welding. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO., Ltd. Nov. 18, 1953 [Dec. 4, 1952], No. 30810/52. Class 83 (4). In apparatus for welding a. tip to a metallic base, e.g. a pen nib, the base is held in a clamp having jaws spring urged together and separated by manual rotation of a cam. The base is held between the end of a stud 10 secured to the frame 1 of a welding machine and the inner face of a U-shaped extension 17 of a sleeve 15 slidably but non-rotatably mounted on the stud 10. The clamping faces are urged together by a spring 20 held in position by a cover 21 axially located by a pin 19 passing through the stud 10. Rotation of the cam 14 by a lever 22 separates the clamping faces. A supply of tips is housed in a holder 5a mounted on a flexible member 6. Depression of the member 6 causes a tip to be moved to the welding position, and subsequent release of the member brings the tip into engagement with the base. The tip is welded to the base by electric arc or resistance welding and when fusion occurs the resulting upward movement of the holder 5a cuts off the welding current.
