Abstract

In recovering starch from a mixture of cell conglomerates, bran particles, free starch particles and gluten, obtained by grinding cereal, e.g. maize, grains, the mixture, preferably freed of particles over 1 mm. in size, is suspended in a liquid and fed under pressure into a vortex separator from which a fraction (a) containing substantially all cell conglomerates over 200 microns in size is discharged through one aperture and a fraction (b) containing substantially all the bran particles is discharged through another aperture. Free starch and gluten present in the mixture may be removed before it is treated in the vortex separator. Fraction (a) may contain most of the cell conglomerates having sizes ranging from 100 or 130 to 200 microns and may be ground to liberate starch, gluten and bran from the cells and then subjected to further separation, e.g. by being passed again through the vortex separator. Before fraction (a) is ground, free starch and gluten present therein may be separated from the cell conglomerates, e.g. in a further vortex separator or by screening. Fraction (b) may be screened to separate coarse bran particles from very fine bran particles, free starch particles, gluten and very fine cell conglomerates. The vortex separator may be a hydrocyclone, or a vortex chamber, for example as described in Specification 671,943, [Group II]. A number of vortex separators connected in parallel, for example a multihydrocyclone, may be used. Each fraction may be discharged into a back-pressure chamber described in Specification 693,649, [Group II]. Specification 733,438 also is referred to.
