Abstract

733,087. Paddle wheels. VOITH GES., J. M. Oct. 28, 1952 (Dec. 31, 1951], No. 27043/52. Class 4. A vane wheel marine propeller having vanes which are subjected to a controlled rocking motion about axes parallel to the axis of rotation of the propeller by means of vane oscillating mechanism having a control centre adapted to be moved into different eccentric positions with respect to the axis of rotation of the propeller for varying the amplitude of oscillation of the vanes, is characterized in that the vane oscillating mechanism comprises lever members fixed to the pivots of the respective vanes and radial coupling members the inner ends of which surround and are rotatable around the control centre, the said coupling members being pivotally connected to the said lever members of the respective vanes at substantially equal radial distances from the control centre such that the curve representing successive vane angles during rotation of the propeller is substantially sine shaped. The blades 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP>, 4<SP>111</SP> are each formed with a journal 5 carrying a lever 6 to which one end of a coupling rod 7 is pivotally attached. The casing 2, in which the journals 5 are mounted, is driven by a hollow shaft 1 supported by a stationary casing 3 formed with a universal mounting for a control arm 10 having a ball-end mounting for a bush 9. The inner end of one rod 7 is pivotally mounted on the bush by means of a boss 8 which carries upper and lower journal extensions for the inner ends of the other two vertically spaced rods 7, the central unit so formed being arranged for sliding movement between spaced faces 11 and 12 under the control of the arm 10.
