Abstract

Delustred polyamide threads, fibres, bristles, ribbons, &c., having a high bulk-elasticity are made by mixing a linear polyamide with polystyrene in an amount of 0.5 to 35 per cent by weight of the polyamide and melt-spinning the composition. The polystyrene is distributed in the polyamide as microscopically small particles. Mixing is effected by (1) jointly melting the two components, (2) adding one component to a melt of the other, or (3) combining melts of the two components; mixing being performed under sub-, normal- or super-atmospheric pressure in an inert atmosphere. In examples (1) 10 kg. polycaprolactam (M.W. 15,000) and 1.5 kg. polystyrene (M.W. 180,000) are melted together. The blend is extruded in ribbon form, comminuted and melt-spun into a mat fibre. (2) 10 Kg. polyhexamethylene adipamide (M.W. 16,000) and 1 kg. polystyrene (M.W. 110,000) are jointly melted. The blend is cast into ribbons, comminuted and melt-spun by the grid-spinning process into staple fibre.
