[Also in Groups XIV and XXII] Nuts and bolt heads are provided with heat localizing welding projections that extend from the corners beyond the original confinee of the nut, &c. The projections are produced by dies that cause a local flow of metal at the corners only. The projections are thus widely spaced from the threads, and clogging by the welding flash is avoided. An ordinary square nut 1 is supported on a lower die 3, Fig. 6, having recesses 4 to receive and shape metal flowing from the corners under pressure of projections 6 on the upper die that press down metal from the corners forming faces 7 parallel to the axis of the nut, faces 8 perpendicular to the axis, and projections that extend at 8b beyond the original confines of the nut and project at 8c beyond the end face. In a modification the projections remain flush with the end face of the nut and the part having the faces 7 can enter a hole in a plate to serve as a pilot, welding taking place on the faces 8. In a further form metal from the corners is spread laterally to form ears 46, Fig. 18, bearing welding projections 67. One of the forging dies may be axially bored to pass the shank 51, Fig. 21 of a bolt, the die to have the hole being chosen according to whether the projections 56 are to be formed on the face 53 or that adjacent the shank. As shown the projections serve for welding the bolt to a plate 58, but when the projections are on the other face, the shank of the bolt is passed through a hole in the plate. The projections may be formed by displacing the whole of the metal of the corners either towards the shank at 84, Fig. 30 or away from it at 84a, by a quasi bending operation in dies, and nuts may be similarly treated. In other forms the whole of the head except the corners is thinned by pressure between dies, the resulting flow causing projections to form at the free corners. Round-headed bolts may be thinned by a square die with the formation of segmented projections 97, Fig. 40. Welding projections may be formed on one limb of an angle bracket, the other limb being drilled and tapped. Shims or like flat packing pieces may also be formed with welding projections on one face.
