Abstract

732,414. Printing ink. HUMBER CORPORATION, J. M. May 29, 1953 [March 13, 1953], No. 15054/53. Class 146(3). An anti-misting printing ink comprises colouring matter and a swollen finely divided montmorillonitic material, e.g. bentonite, dispersed in a water-immiscible liquid. The bentonite may be swollen by water or formamide or by a solution of a solid having a high dielectric constant, e.g. N-methyl acetamide dissolved in water or formamide. The bentonite may be swollen before it is added to the ink or in situ. In examples (1) To a black news ink comprising mineral oil, channel black and " Gilsonite " (R.T.M.) was added lecithin and water and the mixture agitated; bentonite was then added and the mixture stirred to permit the bentonite to absorb the water. (2) To the news ink of Ex. 1 was added bentonite and octadecylamine and the mixture agitated; water was then added and the ink aged for 24 hours. (3) A coloured news ink comprising lithol red pigment, mineral oil and limed rosin was milled with bentonite which had been swelled by water. (4) A heat set ink comprising furnace black, zincated rosin and a mineral solvent (b.p. 205‹-235‹C.) was treated with sorbitol monolaurate, and was water emulsified into the ink ; bentonite was then added and the mixture passed over a three roller mill.
