Abstract

267,625. Whatmough, W. H. Dec. 22, 1925. Carbon papers and ink ribbons.-Composite pigments in a form in which they can be collected as a solid are made by precipitating one or more coloured pigments or dyes in an aqueous suspension of black carbon pigment. The aqueous suspension may contain oleaginous material such as glyceride or hydrocarbon oil, fats, or waxes, in which case the oleaginous matter is precipitated with the coloured pigment and carbon to form a paste or the like. Mineral blues such as Prussian blue or Turnbull's blue or coloured lakes are particularly suitable for modifying the carbon pigment, or aniline dyes, such as crystal violet may be precipitated on the carbon with or without fixing agents such as tartar emetic and tannic acid. The dispersions may include small amounts of dispersing agents such as alkalies or soaps. The pigments may be dispersed in water, water and wax or oil dispersions, or oil such as linseed oil, and may be used for making typewriter carbons or ribbons &c. In example, (1) carbon black is dispersed in water, a solution of potassium ferrocyanide is added, and the solution acidified with hydrochloric acid. The addition of ferric chloride solution produces a homogeneous pigment comprising Prussian blue or carbon particles. (2) Carbon black is dispersed in a dispersion of carnauba wax and water. Prussian blue is precipitated in the solution as before and produces a soft solid pigment useful for carbon papers, ribbons, &c. It can be easily dispersed in an carnauba wax and water suspension. Softer pastes may be made by substituting beeswax or castor oil for the carnauba wax. (3) Carbon black is suspended in water, crystal violet is added, and the mixture heated and agitated. Tartar emetic, tannin, and sodium carbonate in solution are added and the heating and agitation is continued. A purplish-black pigment is produced. Castor oil, carnauba wax, or beeswax may be contained in the original suspension if an oleaginous material is required. Specification 267,207 is referred to.
