A high waisted corset of the hookside type is provided with a two-part front section wherein a separate upper front centre piece 12 has an upper portion set well above the waist of the garment, and a lower portion extended below the waist where it overlaps the upper portion of a lower front centre piece 11 and upwardly extending resilient abdominal stiffening strips 18 thereof, the upper front centre piece 12 being of less width than the lower front centre piece 11 and being elastically stretchable so as to stretch when the garment is worn and thereby press upon and control the diaphragm of the wearer above the waist, while reinforcing the abdominal stiffening strips 18 at their upper ends. In one construction, the upper front centre piece I consists of a pair of centre panels 19 fitted with thin strip steel stiffeners 23, secured together by releasable fastenings 21, 22 and joined by elastic inserts 20 to longitudinal marginal panels 9, 10. In an alternative construction the panels 19 are permanently joined together, Fig. 2 (not shown), or are formed as a single whole.
