731,927. Pit props. RITCHIE, C. March 2, 1953 [Nov. 30, 1951], No. 28175/51. Addition to 711,603. Class 20 (2). In a telescopic pit prop providing mechanical and fluid-pressure mine roof support adapted to operate separately or together as described in the parent Specification, the mechanical means comprises laminae 13 of nearly the same length as the prop and spaced from one another by friction parts 19 adapted to be compressed together to adjust the yieldability of the prop by a lock comprising an eccentric 24 operated by a lever 24a on one side and an adjusting screw 22 on the other. The laminae 13 are contained between the flanges of 'the I-section upper prop part 11, pass round a bolt 14 at the lower end of the upper prop part 11 and their ends are contained in a cavity of the prop head 12. Intermediate pieces 15 and a bolt 16 maintain the laminae in spaced position round the bolt 14. Fluid-pressure operation comprises piston 26 on the upper prop member fitting the interior of the lower prop member and controlled by inlet and outlet valves 29 and release valve 30.
