731,810. Screw-cutting lathes. MOTOR GEAR & ENGINEER. ING CO., Ltd., and HAMMETT, E. S.. March 3, 1953 [Dec. 3, 1951], No. 28330/51. Class 83 (3). Hollow cutter-heads.-In a method of cutting a helical groove a workpiece is rotated and a head with an inwardlydirected cutting tool thereon is rotated around it about an axis offset from the work axis, the tool and. work being given relative traverse in the axial direction of the work at the rate for the helix to be cut and the axis of rotation of the tool being at or substantially at the angle of helix to the axis of rotation of the work. An embodiment suitable for use in conjunction with a screw-cutting lathe comprises a cross slide 10 having an upstanding bracket 11 with a vertically adjustable bearing block 13. Rotatable on ball bearings 14, Fig. 2, within the block is a sleeve 15 having, on one end face, clamping means 16 for a pair of diametrically opposed inwardly directed cutting tools 17. On the other end of the sleeve is a pulley 19 for driving the tool head by V-belts and an electric motor 21 at a speed of between 2000 and 4000 revolutions per minute. The bracket is also rotatable about a vertical axis 23 passing through the centre 24 of rotation of the tools and perpendicular to the axis of rotation 25 thereof. Alternatively, this bracket may be adjustable about a horizontal axis at right angles to that of the work. Multi-start threads may be cut by staggering the tools.
