Abstract
1,171,285. Sawing. WATKINS MFG. CO. 2 Nov., 1966, No. 24598/66. Heading B5L. A process for producing slugs or cut-off pieces from stock comprises rotating the stock on its axis, providing at least one rotating cut-off tool adjacent the stock having its axis parallel with the axis of rotation of the stock, the rotation of the stock and tool having a very high differential speed, and effecting a movement of the tool axis towards the stock. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the bar stock 20 is gripped by a chuck 19 carried by a hollow spindle 16 which is mounted in a headstock 11 and driven by a belt drive 29 from a motor 32. The headstock is mounted on a base 10 which carries a longitudinally disposed block 22 along which a slide 23 is adjustably clamped, the slide carrying, at its end adjacent the headstock, a stop 27 for locating the end of the bar stock. A second block 33 is disposed transversely of block 22 and slidably supports a pair of crossslides (36, 37, Fig. 5) each of which slidably supports a tool slide (40, 41) carrying a bearing block (46, 47) for a tool spindle (48, 49), the tool slides being clampable in adjusted positions. Each tool spindle is connected by telescopic rods 60, 61 incorporating universal joints 56, 57, 68, 69 to respective motors 74, 75 mounted on the machine bed 10. The tool spindle 49 carries a circular saw 78, and the tool spindle 48 carries a pair of circular saws 76, 77, saw 77 being slightly larger than saw 76 so that it completes its cut first, the saws being so spaced on the spindles that they complete their cuts in sequence. Each cross-slide is joined by a depending leg (94, 95) to an associated piston-andcylinder device under the control of separate valves having solenoids which are actuated when its cross-slide has moved to the limit to complete its cutting operation to retract the saw or saws from the workpiece, the valves also being connected to a manual or automatic valve for starting the cutting operation. Coolant is supplied to the saws which may have teeth or operate by friction. The work may be formed, drilled or reamed before the cutting operation and may be of round, square or hexagonal solid or tubular cross-section. The saw blades may be provided with teeth or cut by friction and have a thickness between 0À006 and 0À032 inch and rotate at 10,000 r.p.m. Ferrous material may be cut at speeds of 900 to 1200 surface feet per minute and non-ferrous material at speeds between 7165 and 21,000 surface feet per minute, the feed being 0À010 to 0À0226 inch per revolution of the workpiece. For small diameter workpieces, the latter may rotate at 450,000 r.p.m. The saw and workpieces may rotate in the same or opposite directions.
