Abstract

731,621. Staple hoppers. WYLIE & CO., Ltd., M. Sept. 18, 1953 [Oct. 3, 1952], No. 24816/52. Class 78(1). A staple hopper unit for feeding staples to a stapler comprises a drum 12, diametrical guide members 17 rotating therewith, staple-like slots 16A formed in the drum, and guide rails 19 such that the drum is rotated intermittently so that it stops in the position where staples caught on a guide member slide down through a slot 16A on to a guide rail 19 to the stapler. As shown, drum 12 is rotated by motor 22 through reduction gearing 24, chain 27 and sprocket 26 forming part of a clipping clutch. Sprocket 26, secured to cam 26A, cooperates with roller 35 carried by pivoted spring arm 36, whilst stops 40, 41, 40A, 41A carried by the drum co-operate with roller 39 drum carried by the said spring arm. The drum rotates till stop 41 contacts roller 39. The clutch then slips and the staples in the drum are shaken. Then the cam contacts roller 35 so as to free the drum, which latter then rotates till stop 40 contacts the same said roller 39. Then the drum stops and the staples fall down guide member 17 onto the rail 19. Then the cam contacts roller 35 so that the revolution of the drum begins again. In this way the staples are fed down a plurality of rails 19, each rail being fitted with spring fingers 21B which can be swung to arrest at will the feed down any particular rail.
