Apparatus for severing a continuous strip a of paper into sheets along longitudinallyspaced transverse weakened lines a<SP>1</SP> against a blade and of the kind comprising a pair of superposed feed rollers for feeding the strip to a pair of power-driven tensioning rollers which are rotated at a higher speed than the feed rollers is characterized in that the tensioning rollers comprise superposed roller members at least one of which comprises transverselyspaced narrow rollers having a short axial length to engage the strip on or adjacent to each of its longitudinal marginal edges, each of the narrow rollers having a rubber covering at least a part of the surface of which is tapered inwardly towards the centre of the strip. As shown, the upper tensioning roller comprises a pair of narrow adjustable side rollers 1, each having a frusto-conical portion 1b, and a central cylindrical roller 2, and the lower tensioning roller 4 extends the full width of the strip a. One or more rubber-covered cylindrical rollers may be provided between the roller 2 and each of the rollers 1. The roller 4 may be replaced by a series of short adjustable rollers of corresponding shade to the short upper rollers and in register therewith. The rollers 1, 2 may constitute the lower tensioning roller instead of the upper one. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the narrow side rollers are barrelshaped.
