Abstract
731,592. Phase modulation; valve generating circuits. POSTMASTER-GENERAL. Nov. 18, 1952 [Jan. 1, 1951], No. 77/51. Classes 40 (5) and 40 (6). A circuit for producing phase or frequency modulation comprises two or more earthedgrid valve amplifying stages, the phase change in which is determined mainly by the input conductance and capacitance of the following stage, which are varied by varying the mutual conductance of the said stage. The earthedgrid stages may be arranged between an oscillation generator and an output circuit, phase modulation being produced by application of a signal to their grid-cathode circuits, Figs. 1, 3 (not shown). Frequency modulation may be obtained by preliminary differentiation of the modulating signal. Alternatively the earthedgrid stages V1, V2, V3 may be arranged in the back-coupling circuit of a self-oscillating valve V4, the modulating source M being connected to their grid circuits. The latter also include, in their common cathode branches, inductors L<SP>1</SP>1, L<SP>1</SP>2, L<SP>1</SP>3 offering high impedances to the carrier frequency and resistors R<SP>1</SP>1, R<SP>1</SP>2, R<SP>1</SP>3, affording cathode bias and negative feed-back at the modulating frequencies. The anode circuits are decoupled at modulating frequencies by inductors L4, L5, L6 and the modulating source M is bridged by a low resistor R<SP>1</SP>4 and decoupling capacitor C<SP>1</SP>4. The mean oscillator frequency is adjusted by variation of resistor R<SP>1</SP>3 and the phase-modulated output is derived from the screen grid of valve V4.
