Abstract

731,464. Supporting gramophone pick-ups. CALTAGIRONE, J. V. Jan. 13, 1953 [Jan. 23, 1952], No. 1010/53. Class 40 (2). A pick-up arm 17 is mounted in a universal joint which may be rotated and secured in its housing 37 so that a coiled tension spring 40, drawing the arm 17 in a direction perpendicular with respect to pivots 27, is arranged to produce downward pressure on the record with an element of side pressure to counteract the side pressure produced on the stylus as a result of the friction between it and the rotating record. If the outer ring 31 of the universal joint is rotated clockwise, as viewed in Fig. 4 (B), the spring 40 produces a component of side pressure towards the centre of the record and, owing to the inclination of the pivots 27, the effective pressure of the spring 40 becomes less as the pick-up arm approaches the centre of the record. If the universal joint is rotated counterclockwise, the component of side pressure of the spring 40 is away from the centre of the record, but increases as the pick-up arm approaches the centre of the record. According to which way the universal joint is set, the pick-up 18 is reset on the end of arm 17 so that the stylus 23 is normal to the record, as in Fig. 4 (B). The arm 17 is counterbalanced by an adjustable weight 47, so that stylus pressure on the record is largely the result of the pressure of the spring 40, and is thereby largely independent of gravity.
