Abstract
730,856. Piston valves. NORTHROP AIRCRAFT, Inc. Aug. 29, 1951 [April 16, 1951], No. 20412/51. Class 135. A hydraulic servo control valve comprises a spool 20 with metering lands movable in a ported sleeve 15, the latter being provided with sets of flow holes (not shown) and sets of metering holes 59 with the metering holes staggered in the longitudinal direction relatively to the sets of flow holes, and in the neutral position of the spool, the spool lands cover the flow holes but only partially cut off flow through the metering holes. A flow hole consists of a circular passage with a small drilled extension leading to the bore in the sleeve, whereas the inner end of a metering hole has a triangular extension 61, Fig. 5. The outer surface of the sleeve is grooved with the middle groove connected to the pressure liquid supply 11, and with the adjacent grooves in which the flow and metering holes are located leading to the two sides of a jack. The various passages are sealed off by packing rings 50. The pressure liquid enters the interior of the sleeve through a circle of apertures 52. The liquid being exhausted from the jack flows into the interior of the spool through apertures 43 and then out through apertures 34, 36 to the exhaust passages 12 through the sleeve. Balancing lands are provided on the spool. The spool is actuated by means of a clevis 21 at one end, and the amount of movement is limited by a pin 27 carried by the sleeve engaging in a slot in the spool spindle. The spool is attached to guiding spindles at each end, and it is connected to the spindles by pins 39. Specification 701,513 is referred to.
