Abstract

730,623. Spinning toys. FRANGOS, E. W July 14, 1953, No. 19483/53. Class 132(3). A spinning toy comprises a body portion and a shaft member fixed to and extending through the body portion, each free end of the shaft member having a reduced neck connected to a ball-like knob, the knobs being adapted to co-operate with means for supporting the toy while permitting rotation thereof. In Fig. 8 two similar shell members 1 are pressed on to a shaft 3 having knobs 7, 8 which are highly polished to permit cradle hooks 17 to swivelly grasp the knobs when the toy is being spun by means of cords 18. Holding members 20 are connected to the cores by swivel joints, Fig. 6 (not shown), and the toy is spun by exerting a repeated pulling and releasing action on the members 20 and the cords. The toy may continue to revolve in one direction due to its momentum when the tension on the cords is reduced, the knobs 7, 8 then rotating in the hooks either of which may be released when the toy is supported by the other hook. In Fig. 10, the toy is supported by a simple hook 22 which passes through a transverse hole in the knob 8, the toy being spun first in one direction and then in the other by moving a button-like member 24 up and down the cord 18 at suitable intervals. The toy may be spun by winding a cord round the shaft portion between the shell members 1 and may be supported on a stand having a vertical pin or a stand with two shaft-supporting arms, Figs. 4, 5, 9 (not shown). Sound producing holes may be formed in the shells 1 which may be of metal or plastic. A modification, Fig. 12 (not shown), has only one shell member.
