A vehicle window raising and lowering mechanism includes a radial window-actuating arm a freely pivoted on a spindle d for a hand lever e, a short arm f secured to the spindle d and having a lost-motion connection with the arm a, a stud g on the arm a passing through an elongated hole h in the arm f, and a pawl r pivoted on the stud g having near its pivotal end a projection r<SP>1</SP> for engagement with a finger-piece s in the arm f and being hooked at its free end to engage with catch-pieces t, u on a ratchet plate q. An abutment x on the pawl r bears against the spring o to load the pawl. The spindle d is supported in a bearing piece i secured to the sheet-metal door part by a nut k, the ratchet plate q being clamped between the part j and the bearing piece i, and a decorative boss n being freely mounted between the lever e and facing material m of the door. The arm a carries a roller b at its free end which engages in a channel secured to the lower edge of a window c vertically movable in guides in the vehicle door, the window being counterbalanced by a spring o connected between the free end of the arm a and a lug p on the ratchet plate q. When lowering the window the initial movement of the hand lever e moves the short arm f to an extent determined by the length of the slot h to cause the finger s to rock the pawl r to disengage it from the part t, or u, continued movement of the handle e causing the arms f and a to move together and the window to descend, a projection v on the arm a engaging an abutment w on the bearing piece i when the window reaches its lowermost position. Upon operating the lever f to close the window the arms a, f move together and upon approaching the closed position the pawl r engages one of the parts t, u. The arm a may be in the form of a parallel motion linkage.
