Abstract
729,236. Firearms. HILL, J. L. Sept. 9, 1952, No. 22640/52. Classes 9(1) and 119. In an automatic, semi-automatic or manually operated gun or rifle, the cartridges 14, Fig. 4, are disposed vertically in a magazine 15 extending longitudinally of the gun and are spring- urged towards a slotted disc 29 rotatably mounted in the chamber block 13, the disc 29 being adapted to oscillate by the action of the bolt 21 between a position in which the slot is vertically disposed to receive a cartridge from the magazine 15 and a position in which the slot prevents the cartridge in alignment with the bore of the barrel. As shown, the gun is automatic having a fixed barrel and the magazine 15 has a hinged closure plate 15a for the loading port through which is introduced a sealed dispensable container 16, Fig. 11, with front and rear ends perforated around the edges to permit their disruption and forward feeding of the cartridges. The bolt mechanism comprises a block 21 receiving a threaded portion of the bolt 22 which terminates at its rear portion in a reduced rod serving as a guide for a recoil spring 25. An extractor 27, Figs. 3, 7 is attached to the bolt 22. Beneath the bolt block 21 is rigidly secured a forwardly extending rod 28 which actuates the disc 29. In the bolt 22 is also located the firing pin 22c. A rearwardly extending plate 13a from the chamber block 13 is apertured to receive a stub shaft 29a extending from one face of the disc 29, in which face also is an arcuate slot 29b into which fits a pin 30 on the plate 13a which limits the rotative movement of the disc 29 to a 90 degrees angle. Parallel ridges 29c, 29d on the other face of the disc form the cartridge slot, the ridge 29c being drilled to receive a spring urged detent 31, Fig. 8, adapted to tilt the cartridge as it is received in the slot, the lower surface of the slot being tapered to permit canting of the cartridge out of alignment with the firing pin 22c to avoid accidental firing before the cartridge is in the barrel. The edge of the disc 29 is grooved at 29e, Fig. 3, and notches 29f, 29g are formed within the groove to be engaged by the head of the disc actuating rod 28. Retraction of the bolt 22 from its forward position shown in Figs. 3, 4 brings the rod 28 rearwardly so that the shoulder 28a, Fig. 3, on the rod engages notch 29f to rotate the disc through 90 degrees, bringing the disc slot parallel with the axis of the incoming cartridge which is urged into the slot. Positive rotation of the disc through a 90 degrees angle is assured by over centre spring 34. On firing bolt block 21 is released and carried forward by the spring 25, the front end face 28b of the end of the rod 28 abutting the notch 29g in the disc to rotate it in an opposite direction through 90 degrees bringing the cartridge in the slot in alignment with the bolt and barrel. The bolt 22 then advances through the slot sliding the cartridge from the disc into the gun barrel where it is fired by pin 22c. The explosive force causes the bolt to be thrust rearwardly, the empty cartridge case being extracted by extractor 27 to a position where a fixed ejector 23 trips the cartridge downwardly through an ejection port 38. On rearward movement of the bolt 22 the rod 28 again rotates the disc through 90 degrees and the action is repeated as long as the trigger is pressed to firing position.
