Abstract
To facilitate oral administration by masking taste, and topical application by providing a water repellent coating, antibiotics are coated with a silicone of general formula <FORM:0728759/VI/1> where n is any integral number and the R's are alkyl or aryl groups, mixtures or combinations thereof, by mixing particles of the antibiotic with an organic solvent solution of the silicone. The preferred solvent is chloroform, and the quantity of silicone used is 1 to 20, and preferably 5 to 15 per cent. (based on the antibiotic). Mixtures of antibiotics are coated together or separately. Specified are oxytetracycline, as such, or in the form of a salt, e.g. hydrochloride, sulphate or metal salt; penicillin, streptomycin, polymyxin and bacitracin. Examples relate to (a) coated granules of oxytetracycline containing a cocoa mix, coumarin, ethyl vanillin and sucrose and suitable for admixture with foods such as milk and cereals; (b) coated tablets of potassium penicillin; (c) coated oxytetracycline-containing chewing gum; and (d) tablets of coated oxytetracycline containing sucrose, corn syrup, citric acid, orange flavour and colour.
