An apparatus for dispensing retaining rings comprises a base 22 carrying a rod 18 on which a plurality of retaining rings can be arranged as a stack, the bar having a slideway 23; a tool 11 for effecting withdrawal of a ring of the stack disposed next adjacent the face, the tool having a ring clamping portion 14, 15 providing a part circular ring sealing recess and a backing flange 16 for supporting a ring seated in said recess, and means 24 engageable by said tool upon insertion of the latter in the slideway and, on travel of said tool along said slideway, causing the tool to seat and clamp said ring in its recess and thereupon to effect withdrawal of said ring from the stack together with the tool. As shown, the hand tool 11 is pushed into slideway 23 so as to grip the ring lying therein, the forward movement of the tool causing slide 24 to be pressed inwards against spring 25 until the recess 27 of the slide comes under the rod 18 whereby the lowermost ring thereon is free to fall into said recess. The subsequent withdrawal of the first ring with the tool permits the slide to advance the second ring till the latter falls into the slideway 23 in place of the first ring. Lug 33 extends into the rings on rod 18 so as to maintain their orientation. Rod 18 is held in place by screw 22A. Alternatively, the slide 24 may be moved forwardly towards the tool to present the ring to the latter (by lever or by rack-and-pinion mechanism); or the said slide may be dispensed with and the slideway 23 fitted with an incline whereby the tool may rise to grip a ring and subsequently to withdraw it.
