Abstract

728,195. Sink and float separation. SIMONCARVES, Ltd. Sept. 3, 1953 [July 10, 1953], No. 19181/53. Class 82 (2). Apparatus for separating magnetizable and non-magnetizable particles in suspension in a liquid especially for regenerating a sink-andfloat medium, comprises a settling tank, means for magnetizing the magnetizable particles fed to the tank to agglomerate them so that they may sink in the tank, means for allowing escape of liquid and non-magnetizable particles at the top of the tank, and means for drawing liquid and magnetic particles from the bottom of the tank and either passing the suspension of liquid and particles back to the lower part of the tank, or, if it is of the correct density, utilizing part or all of it as a sink-and-float medium. A tank 1 has an annular non-magnetic wall 2 extending below the liquid level in the device and the mixed suspension is supplied through a pipe 3 within the annulus. A channel 5 receives the overflow from the tank. A rotating non- magnetic disc 7 is arranged above the pipe 3 with a rim dipping in the liquid, and an electromagnet 10 placed above the disc creates an intense local magnetic field. The magnetic particles in the liquid agglomerate and adhere to the plate 7, are carried out of the magnetic field and drop to the bottom of the tank 1. A pump 13 returns the magnetic suspension via a demagnetizer 14 to a splitter unit having a flexible pipe 19 which discharges either into the tank through a pipe 16, if the density is incorrect, or into a pipe 17 if the specific gravity of the discharged suspension is correct. A densitymeasuring device 24 controls the movement of the flexible pipe 19 through a pneumaticallyoperated device 21.
