In a batch mixer, more particularly for concrete or mortar, which comprises an inclined casing defining a lower conveyer trough 4 and an upper mixing trough 5, a shaft 6 extends through both troughs, and in the conveyer trough 4 carries a helical conveyer blade 10 which is cut away at periodically successive sections 11 so that it acts as a preliminary mixing device, and in the mixing trough 5 carries radial mixing arms 18. At its lower end, the inclined casing forms a charging hopper 23, e.g. for sand, gravel and lime. An additional hopper 24 having a regulating plate member 25 is provided for the controlled distribution of cement over the mixture components passing from the hopper 23. A water tank 20 has a perforated pipe 22 which distributes water over the material in the mixing trough. A discharge shoot 13, below the mixing trough 5, is movable between a discharging position, and a position in which it closes a discharge opening from the mixing trough. The cut-away portions 11 in the conveyer blade 10 are closed by curved bridge members 12 which clean the conveyer trough walls. In the mixing trough 5 the shaft 6 carries a composite blade, of which the lower portion 17 is similar to the helical blade 10 but of larger diameter, and the upper portion 19 comprises a narrow helical blade supported by radial arms 18, of sheet metal. The hopper 23 is provided with a water receptacle 26 which when filled increases the weight at the lower end to prevent the machine from tilting downwardly towards its discharge end. The receptacle 26 is emptied when the mixer is to be moved.
