[Also in Groups XXVII and XXXIV] A filter and a filter-pressure-regulating unit therefor is adapted to be used in combination with an engine block having a main oil duct for delivery of lubricating oil under pressure from an oil pump to engine elements to be pressurelubricated, and a connecting,rod duct for delivery of oil to connecting rods, the ducts opening in a face of the engine block. Oil proceeding from the pump along a duct 13, Fig. 1, in an engine block 11 is diverted along a conduit 20 to a filter 32 from the discharge side of which it returns along duct 21 to a main oil duct 12 whence it reaches the main bearings and other parts. Low pressure oil is supplied to the connecting reds along a duct 14 by a restricted duct 42, Fig. 2, leading from the inlet conduit 20. A by-pass valve 47 is set to operate at a pressure such as 15 p.s.i. A filter relief valve 38, Fig. 1, is also provided to operate when the filter becomes clogged. In Fig. 5 incoming unfiltered oil rises up a central tube 58 from whose upper end it is discharged into the main body of a filter casing 49. After passing through the element 32 it reaches the space surrounding discharge pipe 57 which itself surrounds inlet tube 58. The oil then passes through aperture 57a into the pipe 57 and returns along duct 21 to the main oil duct 12. A filter relief valve 64 is again provided. The restricted duct 42 along which unfiltered oil passes to the connecting rods is shown in Fig. 7, which also shows a by-pass passage 48.
