Abstract
727,515. Control of A.C. motors. AKTIEBOLAGET ELEMA. Dec. 4, 1952 [Dec. 4, 1951], No. 30790/52. Class 38 (3) [Also in Group VI] A device for stopping or reducing the speed of rotation of motor-driven dental apparatus under the control of the dentist and/or the patient, comprises an electronic amplifier or oscillation generator or a sensitive relay having an input.or control circuit arranged to include at least a part of the body of the dentist and/or the patient so that a change in the position of the dentist's or patient's body can influence the amplifier, oscillation generator or relay to stop or reduce the speed of rotation of the apparatus. The control circuit comprises a conductor 5 connected with an electrode on a handpiece 8 of the dental engine and the input of an amplifier 4, the amplifier input circuit, a conductor 3 connected with a grid of a valve in the amplifier 4 and an electrode 2 in the arm of a dental chair 1, the control circuit being closed when the patient and the dentist are in contact with one another and their corresponding electrodes. The amplifier 4 is provided with alternating current and a winding 14 of a relay is connected across the output of the amplifier 4. The relay contact 13 and a foot switch 12 are arranged in the main supply circuit to the electric motor 11. The motor is started when the control circuit is completed. In the event of the patient and/or the dentist wishing to stop or slow down the electric motor 11, contact between them or their respective electrodes is broken which reduces the output of the amplifier 4 and breaks the motor circuit at the relay contact 13. If desired, the electrode 2 and the patient may be shunted out of the control circuit by a switch 16 in a conductor 15 connected between the conductor 3 and the link system 6 connecting the electric motor 11 with the handpiece 8.
